One of the main concerns regarding nuclear power plants is safety. Without depending on external interferences, small modular reactors (SMRs) provide relatively more protection than traditional nuclear plants. Because electric magnets hold up the controllers, they automatically stop working in case of power loss, releasing the control rods back to the core of the unit, thus blocking reactions. The remaining heat is lowered by a pool, with around fifty million water liters surrounding the core.
Cheaper, faster, and less complex to build, self-contained reactors are miniaturized nuclear reactors that work with the same principles as conventional nuclear power plants. Since containment units can shut down autonomously and remain cold indefinitely, SMRs can contain leaks longer and decrease atomic fuel and energy emitted during emergency shutdowns.
