Robot Caregiver
Miriam Doerr & Martin Frommherz @ M.Doerr & M.Frommherz GbR
Powered with machine learning and machine vision, these robots are designed to monitor and assist the elderly and people with disabilities while engaging in daily tasks. The robots are pre-programmed with a set of algorithms that learn and adapt their actions according to each patient's specific needs, providing tailored services that are developed by understanding gestures, verbal and non-verbal cues.
The deployment of machine learning technology enables the robot to estimate human postures and expressions. By comprehending behavior patterns, robots improve activity suggestions based on each individual. Services include providing all-inclusive care from bed to wheelchair by doing the heavy lifting, assisting with bathroom needs, preparing and serving meals, and dispensing medication. Apart from these applications, these robots can assist emotional needs by providing companionship, and assisting therapists in further treatments such as depression, phobia, and post-traumatic disorders.
Gender Equality
Challenges
The designers must remain keenly aware of not reinforcing stereotypical gender roles in humanoid robots, making the caregivers only female, for example.
Opportunities
Creates decentralized care models.
This would help mitigate loneliness, commonly present in the elderly, especially women, or people in isolated zones.
