Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage

The process of extracting bioenergy from biomass, capturing and storing carbon dioxide, and therefore removing it from the atmosphere. Biomass is converted into heat, electricity, or liquid or gas fuels, and the carbon emissions from this bioenergy conversion are captured and stored in geological formations or embedded in long-lasting products. As biomass draws carbon from the atmosphere as it grows, Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) can be a negative emissions' technology when it is implemented properly. However, the emissions from the growing, harvesting, transporting, and processing of the biomass must not outweigh the captured carbon, and the storage of captured carbon must be reliable over long timescales.
