A software that converts 3D models into printing instructions for a 3D printer.
A software that converts 3D models into printing instructions for a 3D printer.

A software designed to convert a digital three dimensional object model, such as a CAD file or an STL file, into a stack of individual horizontal layers that are provided as print commands to the 3D printer in G-code. The G-code is comprised of G- and M-commands that have an assigned movement or action, as well as specific printer commands such as printhead temperature or bed temperature controls. The G-code file is transferred to the printer which will then print the layers one at a time according to the print commands to form a 3D object.

Objects must be constructed by depositing a layer upon a previous layer, however 3D slicer software can convert solid volumes to hollow spaces which can be infilled by internal structures for robustness. Where a layer "floats" or creates a bridge, the slicer software can add temporary supports which can be detached at the final stage of the object formation.
